Al McGuire
Basketball player and coach Al McGuire started his basketball career at St. John’s Prep. in Brooklyn, New York before setting a record season at St. John’s University. McGuire was drafted by the NBA out of college, first playing for the New York Knicks and then for the Baltimore Bullets. He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College before taking head coaching jobs at Belmont Abbey College and then Marquette University. At Marquette, McGuire’s successes included an NIT Championship and a Final Four appearance. McGuire retired as a coach in 1976 and became a sports commentator for NBC and CBS. McGuire died of leukemia in 2001 at age 72.
