Morris Adler

The son of a rabbi, Morris Adler was born in Russia and came to the U.S. in 1913 as a boy. Adler attended City College of New York and the Jewish Theological Seminary. In 1938, Adler was named Rabbi at the Shaare Zedek temple in Detroit, Michigan. Aside from a U.S. Army stint during WWII, Rabbi Adler remained with Shaare Zedek for the rest of his life, and his congregation grew to one of the largest in the world during his tenure there. In 1957, Adler was named chairman of the United Auto Workers public review board. Adler was shot and killed by a mentally ill young man during Sabbath service in his synagogue in 1966.
