Phillips Brooks

Phillips Brooks (1835–1893) was an American Episcopal clergyman and influential preacher. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he became widely known for his eloquent sermons and pastoral leadership. Brooks served as rector of Trinity Church in Boston, one of the city’s most prominent congregations. He is also remembered as the author of the Christmas carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” written after a visit to Bethlehem and later set to music for church use. In 1891 he was elected Bishop of Massachusetts, a role he held until his death. Brooks’s legacy endures through his preaching and hymnody.
