William Watson Purkey

William Watson Purkey (1932–2021) was an American educator and psychologist known for developing and promoting Invitational Education, a framework focused on creating intentionally welcoming schools and learning environments. Working from a humanistic perspective, he emphasized the influence of messages—sent through people, places, policies, programs, and processes—on students’ self-concept and achievement. Purkey coauthored influential texts that helped define and disseminate the approach, including *Invitational Teaching and Learning*. Through his writing, teaching, and professional leadership, he encouraged educators to build climates of respect, trust, optimism, and care, aiming to invite every learner to realize their potential.
