About This Quote

This humorous quote is from behavioral economist and author Dan Ariely’s 2008 TED Talk on why people make irrational decisions. The quote means that if you go out to bars in hopes of meeting someone attractive, it is smart to bring along a person who looks similar to you but is less attractive than you, so that you will look attractive in comparison. In his TED Talk, Ariely presents the results of a study that illustrate this point.
