Abbott Lawrence Lowell (1856–1943) was an American educator, legal scholar, and public intellectual who served as President of Harvard University from 1909 to 1933. Born in Boston, he studied at Harvard College and later earned a law degree. Before leading Harvard, he taught government and helped shape the emerging field of political science in the United States. As president, Lowell oversaw major expansion of the university, promoted the tutorial system, and supported the development of Harvard’s residential House system. He also wrote influential works on government and constitutional questions, including studies of American political institutions.
