Abigail Van Buren

Pauline Esther Phillips (1918–2013) was an American advice columnist best known by the pen name Abigail Van Buren, creator of “Dear Abby.” Born in Sioux City, Iowa, she was the twin sister of columnist Ann Landers (Esther Pauline Friedman Lederer). Phillips began “Dear Abby” in 1956, and the column grew into one of the most widely syndicated advice features in the United States, appearing in newspapers and later online. Known for brisk, practical counsel and a sharp wit, she addressed everyday dilemmas about relationships, etiquette, and family life. In later years, her daughter Jeanne Phillips continued the “Dear Abby” column.
