Adlai Ewing Stevenson II (1900–1965) was an American politician and diplomat. A Democrat, he served as Governor of Illinois from 1949 to 1953, promoting governmental reform and opposing corruption. Stevenson became his party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1952 and again in 1956, running against Dwight D. Eisenhower in both elections.
