Adlai E. Stevenson (II)

Adlai Ewing Stevenson II (1900–1965) was an American politician and diplomat. A Democrat, he served as Governor of Illinois from 1949 to 1953, promoting governmental reform and opposing corruption. Stevenson became his party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1952 and again in 1956, running against Dwight D. Eisenhower in both elections. Known for his eloquence and intellectual style, he remained a prominent voice in national and international affairs. President John F. Kennedy appointed him U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in 1961, a post he held until his death in 1965, representing the United States during major Cold War crises.
