Alan Alda

Alan Alda (born Alphonso Joseph D’Abruzzo; January 28, 1936) is an American actor, writer, and director. He is best known for playing Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce on the television series *M*A*S*H* (1972–1983), a role that made him a major figure in American TV. Alda also wrote and directed multiple episodes of the series. His film work includes *The Aviator* and *Marriage Story*. Beyond acting, he is known for nonfiction writing and public advocacy focused on science communication, including his leadership of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University.
