Albert Schweitzer
Albert Schweitzer (1875–1965) was an Alsatian theologian, philosopher, physician, organist, and humanitarian. Trained in theology and music, he became influential for his scholarship on the historical Jesus, notably *The Quest of the Historical Jesus* (1906). He later studied medicine and in 1913 founded a hospital at Lambaréné in what is now Gabon, where he worked for decades. Schweitzer was also a noted interpreter of J. S. Bach and wrote on music and ethics, including his principle of “Reverence for Life.” In 1952 he received the Nobel Peace Prize, and he used the award to support his medical work.
