Alfred Wainwright

Alfred Wainwright (1907–1991) was an English author and illustrator celebrated for his meticulous walking guides to England’s Lake District. Born in Blackburn, Lancashire, he moved to Kendal in 1946, where he worked for the local authority and later became Borough Treasurer. A passionate fellwalker, he spent years exploring the Lakeland fells and recording routes, maps, and observations in distinctive hand-lettered, hand-drawn volumes. His seven-volume *Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells* (1955–1966) became a landmark of outdoor literature for its clarity, detail, and personal voice. He also wrote other guides and books about the region.
