Ambrose Bierce

Ambrose Bierce was born in Ohio in 1913. He grew up poor but with a love of reading and writing. At the start of the Civil War, Bierce enlisted in the Union Army’s 9th Indiana Infantry Regiment, fighting in the Battle of Shiloh. Following his military career, Bierce worked as a journalist in San Francisco, often attracting controversy for his opinionated coverage of events such as the Railroad Refinancing Bill of 1896 and the McKinley assassination. Bierce also published several notable short stories, poems, and books, including the short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” and the book The Devil’s Dictionary. Bierce disappeared in 1913 after traveling to Mexico to witness the Mexican Revolution.
