Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart (1897–1937) was an American aviation pioneer and author. She gained international fame in 1928 as the first woman to fly across the Atlantic as a passenger, then in 1932 became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. Earhart set multiple aviation records and promoted opportunities for women in flight, helping found the Ninety-Nines, an organization of women pilots. She wrote about her experiences in books including *20 Hrs., 40 Min.* (1928) and *The Fun of It* (1932). In 1937, she disappeared over the Pacific during an attempted round-the-world flight.
