Anne Frank
As a young child, Annelies “Anne” Marie Frank moved with her family, which was of Jewish descent, from Germany to Amsterdam in 1933 after the Nazis gained control over Germany. In school, Anne excelled in reading and writing. By 1940, the Nazis had also occupied the Netherlands, and in 1942, as prosecutions of Jews increased, the Franks went into hiding in some hidden rooms in the building where Anne’s father, Otto, worked. While in hiding, Anne kept a diary of her experiences that would later be published as The Diary of a Young Girl. In 1944, the family was betrayed and sent to concentration camps. Anne and her sister Margot died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945.
