Annie Dillard
Annie Dillard (born Annie Doak, April 30, 1945) is an American author and essayist known for nature writing and literary nonfiction. She grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and studied at Hollins College, earning a B.A. in 1967 and an M.A. in 1968. Her book *Pilgrim at Tinker Creek* (1974), based on close observation of the natural world in Virginia’s Blue Ridge region, won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. Dillard also wrote *Teaching a Stone to Talk* (1982), *An American Childhood* (1987), and *The Writing Life* (1989). She has taught writing and lived for many years in the Pacific Northwest.
