Anthony Burgess
Anthony Burgess (1917–1993) was an English novelist, critic, and composer. Born John Anthony Burgess Wilson in Manchester, he served in the British Army during World War II and later worked in education and broadcasting. Burgess wrote more than 30 novels, along with criticism, essays, and journalism, and he composed music throughout his life. He is best known for *A Clockwork Orange* (1962), a dystopian novel notable for its invented slang, Nadsat, and its exploration of free will and violence. Other works include *The Malayan Trilogy* and *Earthly Powers*. He spent many of his later years abroad.
