Arlene Blum

Arlene Blum (born 1945) is an American biophysical chemist, mountaineer, and environmental health advocate. She is widely known for leading the first all-women ascent of Annapurna I, one of the world’s highest peaks. Trained as a scientist, Blum has combined research with public advocacy, focusing on the health and environmental impacts of flame retardant chemicals. Her work has helped bring attention to how such chemicals are used in consumer products and how they can affect people and ecosystems. Through writing, speaking, and organizing, she has promoted safer alternatives and stronger protections for public health while continuing to be recognized for her achievements in high-altitude climbing.
