Arnold Bennett

Arnold Bennett (1867–1931) was an English novelist, journalist, and playwright, best known for fiction set in the Staffordshire Potteries, which he called the “Five Towns.” Born in Hanley, Staffordshire, he moved to London and built a career in journalism and letters. Bennett achieved wide popularity with novels that combine social realism, detailed observation, and a strong sense of place. His “Five Towns” books include *Anna of the Five Towns* (1902) and *The Old Wives’ Tale* (1908), the latter often regarded as his masterpiece. He also wrote plays, essays, and practical works on writing and self-improvement. Bennett died in 1931.
