Arthur Cleveland Coxe

Arthur Cleveland Coxe (1818–1896) was an American Episcopal bishop, poet, and hymn writer. Born in Mendham, New Jersey, he graduated from the University of the City of New York (now New York University) and was ordained in the Episcopal Church. Coxe served as rector of several parishes before becoming the second Bishop of Western New York in 1865, a post he held until his death in Buffalo. Alongside his church leadership, he wrote widely in verse and prose, producing devotional poetry and hymns, as well as theological and historical works. His writings reflect a learned, high-church Anglican outlook and a strong interest in church tradition.
