Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish physician and writer, best known for creating Sherlock Holmes. Born in Edinburgh, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and later practiced as a doctor. While building his literary career, he published the first Holmes novel, *A Study in Scarlet* (1887), followed by stories that made the detective an enduring figure in popular fiction, notably *The Sign of Four* (1890) and *The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes* (1892). Conan Doyle also wrote historical novels, science fiction, and plays, including *The Lost World* (1912). He was knighted in 1902.
