Arthur Freed (1894–1973) was an American lyricist and Hollywood film producer closely associated with MGM’s classic movie musicals. He began his career writing popular songs, including “Singin’ in the Rain” (1929), and later moved into film production at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Freed became a key figure in shaping the studio musical, producing a run of influential films and overseeing a production group widely known as the “Freed Unit.” Among the best-known movies connected with his work are *Singin’ in the Rain* (1952) and *An American in Paris* (1951).
