Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller (1915–2005) was an American playwright and essayist whose work examined moral responsibility, social pressure, and the costs of personal failure. Born in New York City, he studied at the University of Michigan before turning to the theatre. He achieved major success with *Death of a Salesman* (1949), a landmark drama of postwar American life that won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Miller followed with *The Crucible* (1953), using the Salem witch trials to explore the dynamics of accusation and fear. His other plays include *All My Sons* (1947) and *A View from the Bridge* (1955).
