Babatunde Olatunji

Babatunde Olatunji (1927–2003) was a Nigerian drummer, educator, and recording artist who helped popularize African drumming in the United States. Born in Ajido, near Badagry, Nigeria, he moved to the U.S. in the 1950s and studied at Morehouse College. Olatunji gained wide recognition with his 1959 album *Drums of Passion*, which introduced many listeners to Yoruba-inspired percussion and ensemble performance. He performed and recorded extensively, collaborated with a range of musicians, and became known as a dynamic teacher of rhythm and culture. Through concerts, workshops, and recordings, he promoted African musical traditions and cross-cultural understanding.
