Benjamin Franklin
Born to colonial parents of modest means, Benjamin Franklin’s formal schooling ended at age 10. He became an apprentice to his brother, a printer, at age 12. At age 17, he ran away to Philadelphia, working as a typesetter. In 1728, Franklin set up his own printing house and newspaper, The Pennsylvania Gazette, and in 1733, he began to publish the popular pamphlet Poor Richard’s Almanack. Aside from publishing, Franklin was also quite involved with public affairs and his work as a scientist and inventor. During the American Revolution, Franklin campaigned for colonial unity and helped draft the Declaration of Independence. Some other hats Franklin wore included first U.S. Postmaster General, first U.S. Ambassador to France, and President of Pennsylvania.
