Betty Smith

Betty Smith (1896–1972) was an American novelist whose work drew on the experiences of working-class life in New York City. Born in Brooklyn, she is best known for her debut novel, *A Tree Grows in Brooklyn* (1943), a coming-of-age story that became a widely read classic. Smith later published additional novels, including *Tomorrow Will Be Better* (1948), *Maggie-Now* (1958), and *Joy in the Morning* (1963). She also wrote for the stage and screen, including the play *A Tree Grows in Brooklyn* (1951). Her writing is noted for its plainspoken realism, warmth, and attention to family, resilience, and aspiration.
