Bill Vaughan

William E. “Bill” Vaughan was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1915. He grew up in St. Louis and attended Washington University there. Vaughan came to Kansas City in about 1939 and wrote a syndicated column for the Kansas City Star called “Starbeams” from 1946 until his death in 1977. Vaughan was also published, under the pseudonym Burton Hills, in Better Homes and Gardens and Reader’s Digest. Vaughan’s writing was characterized by his sense of humor about the absurdity of human existence. Many Bill Vaughan quotes from his long-running “Starbeams” column are collected in books and online. Vaughan died from lung cancer at age 61.
