Blaise Pascal

Born in Clermont-Ferrand, France in 1623, Blaise Pascal was a child prodigy who was educated by his father. At age 16, Pascal produced his first serious mathematical works, known today as Pascal’s theorem. At 19, Pascal invented the mechanical calculator. Throughout his life, Pascal ‘s work continued to influence the field of mathematics, as well as the physical sciences. In 1654, Pascal had a religious vision, causing him to abandon scientific work and focus on philosophy and theology. Pascal produced two of his most famous works, Lettres provincials and Pensées,in the following years. In 1662, at age 39, Pascal died of tuberculosis and/or stomach cancer.
