Brooks Atkinson

Brooks Atkinson (1894–1984) was an American theater critic and journalist best known for his long tenure as drama critic for *The New York Times*. Born in Melrose, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and began his career in journalism before joining the *Times*, where his reviews helped shape public and critical opinion of Broadway and American theater. Atkinson wrote widely on drama and culture and was respected for clear, authoritative criticism. He also authored books, including works on theater and on figures such as Abraham Lincoln. In 1960, the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York City was named in his honor, reflecting his influence on American stage life.
