Buchi Emecheta
Buchi Emecheta (1944–2017) was a Nigerian-born British novelist whose fiction often drew on her own experiences of migration, motherhood, and women’s lives. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, she moved to London in the 1960s and began writing while raising her children. She became widely known for novels including *Second-Class Citizen* (1974) and *The Joys of Motherhood* (1979), which explore the pressures of gender, family, and colonial and postcolonial society. Emecheta also wrote autobiographical and semi-autobiographical works and was recognized as a major voice in Black British and African literature.
