Bussy-Rabutin

Roger de Rabutin, comte de Bussy (1618–1693), known as Bussy-Rabutin, was a French aristocrat, soldier, and writer celebrated for his memoirs and correspondence. A cousin of Madame de Sévigné, he moved in the literary and courtly circles of Louis XIV. His satirical roman à clef, *Histoire amoureuse des Gaules* (1665), mocking prominent figures at court, led to his imprisonment in the Bastille and subsequent exile from court. During years spent largely on his Burgundian estate, he produced extensive letters and memoirs that offer a sharp, often caustic portrait of 17th-century French society and politics.
