Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933) was the 30th President of the United States, serving from 1923 to 1929. A Republican from Vermont, he rose through state politics to become governor of Massachusetts, gaining national attention for his response to the 1919 Boston Police Strike. He was elected vice president in 1920 and became president upon the death of Warren G. Harding. Coolidge won election in his own right in 1924 and became known for a restrained style of leadership and a commitment to limited government.
