Candy Chang

Candy Chang (born 1978) is a Taiwanese-American artist, designer, and urban planner known for participatory public art that invites people to share hopes, fears, and everyday reflections in public space. She gained wide recognition for “Before I Die,” a project that began as a public chalkboard wall where passersby completed the prompt “Before I die I want to…,” and which has since been recreated in many communities. Chang’s work often blends design, civic engagement, and storytelling, using simple, accessible formats to spark conversation among strangers. Through installations and community-centered projects, she explores how cities can foster connection, empathy, and collective meaning.
