Carolyn Wells (1862–1942) was an American writer and poet best known for her prolific output of mystery fiction, children’s books, and verse. Born in Rahway, New Jersey, she began her career working as a librarian at the Rahway Library Association, an experience that supported her wide-ranging literary interests. Wells published numerous novels and story collections, including the popular Fleming Stone detective series, which helped establish her reputation in early twentieth-century crime writing. She also wrote light poetry and books for younger readers, and she compiled anthologies. Over several decades, Wells became a familiar name in American popular literature.
