Cass Gilbert
Cass Gilbert (1859–1934) was an American architect whose work helped shape the image of early 20th‑century civic and commercial architecture. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, he trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and began his career in Minnesota. Gilbert gained national prominence for the Woolworth Building in New York City (completed 1913), a landmark skyscraper in a Gothic style. He later designed major public buildings, including the United States Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C. (completed 1935). His projects often combined modern construction with historical architectural forms, and he remained influential in American architectural practice.
