Catherine of Aragon

Catherine of Aragon (1485–1536) was a Spanish-born princess who became queen consort of England as the first wife of King Henry VIII. Daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, she was educated in languages and theology and brought a strong humanist piety to the Tudor court. Married first to Henry’s elder brother Arthur, Prince of Wales, she later wed Henry in 1509 and served as regent during his 1513 campaign in France. Catherine is remembered for her extensive correspondence, diplomatic engagement, and patronage of learning and religion, especially amid the annulment crisis that led to her separation from Henry.
