Cecil Frances Alexander
Cecil Frances Alexander was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1818. She started writing poetry and hymns as a child, and by the 1840s, she was a known hymn writer whose hymns were included in Church of Ireland hymn books. Alexander also wrote narrative and lyric poems. Alexander’s most notable work is her book, Hymns for Little Children – many hymns from this book, such as “There is a Green Hill Far Away” and “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” are known by Christians all over the world. Alexander was also involved in charity work, using the proceeds from her publications to help build the Derry and Raphoe Diocesan Institution for the Deaf and Dumb.
