Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin was one of six children of the wealthy doctor Robert Darwin. Darwin followed in his father’s footsteps, studying medicine at University of Edinburgh. At Edinburgh, he became interested in natural history; his father did not like this and made him switch to University of Cambridge. After graduating, Darwin embarked on a five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle, studying geology and wildlife. These investigations led to his conception of the idea of natural selection and evolution, which he would present in his book On the Origin of the Species. Darwin would continue researching and publishing on the subject for the rest of his life, becoming one of the most influential scientists of all time.
