Charles Dudley Warner
Charles Dudley Warner (1829–1900) was an American essayist, novelist, and editor. Born in Plainfield, Massachusetts, he graduated from Hamilton College and later read law before turning to journalism. Warner became associated with the *Hartford Courant* and went on to serve as editor of *Harper’s Magazine*. He is widely remembered as Mark Twain’s co-author of the 1873 novel *The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today*, which helped popularize the term “Gilded Age” for post–Civil War America. Warner also wrote influential essays and travel sketches, including *My Summer in a Garden* (1870), noted for its wit and observations of American life.
