Charles Evans Hughes
Charles Evans Hughes, Sr. was born in Glen Falls, New York in 1862. He was educated at Colgate University, Brown University, and Columbia Law School. In 1905, Hughes was appointed as counsel to the New York state legislative “Stevens as Commission,” which investigated utility rates; during this time, Hughes uncovered corruption that led to lower gas rates in NYC. In 1906, Hughes was elected as the Governor of New York and served until 1910. In 1910, he was appointed to Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, and from 1921 to 1926 was the U.S. Secretary of State under Taft. The Republican also ran in the 1916 U.S. Presidential election, but lost to Woodrow Wilson.
