Charles Kingsley

Charles Kingsley (1819–1875) was an English clergyman, novelist, and social reformer. Ordained in the Church of England, he became known for linking religious faith with concern for social conditions, and he was associated with Christian socialism. Kingsley wrote fiction that combined moral purpose with vivid storytelling and a strong sense of place. His best-known works include the children’s fantasy *The Water-Babies* (1863) and the historical novel *Westward Ho!* (1855). He also produced sermons, essays, and poetry, and he held academic and ecclesiastical posts during his career. Kingsley’s writing helped popularize reform-minded ideas in Victorian Britain.
