Clarence Darrow

Clarence Darrow (1857–1938) was an American lawyer renowned for his courtroom advocacy and public speaking. Born in Kinsman, Ohio, he began his legal career in Ohio before moving to Chicago, where he became associated with labor causes and gained national prominence as a defense attorney. Darrow is best known for representing Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb in their 1924 murder case, arguing against the death penalty, and for his role in the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial in Dayton, Tennessee, defending teacher John T. Scopes on charges related to teaching evolution. He also wrote and lectured widely on law, society, and reform.
