Clement Clarke Moore
Clement Clarke Moore (1779–1863) was an American scholar, writer, and educator associated with New York City. He studied at Columbia College and later became a professor of Hebrew and Greek literature at the General Theological Seminary. Moore is best known for the Christmas poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” widely known by its opening line, “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” first published anonymously in 1823 and later attributed to him. He also published scholarly work, including *A Compendious Lexicon of the Hebrew Language* (1809). Moore died in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1863.
