Clive James

Clive James (1939–2019) was an Australian-born writer, critic, poet, memoirist, and broadcaster who lived and worked in the United Kingdom. Born in Sydney, he moved to Britain in the early 1960s and became known for his wide-ranging essays, cultural criticism, and television commentary. He wrote influential reviews and columns, published poetry, and produced acclaimed memoirs, including *Unreliable Memoirs* and later volumes that traced his life and career. James also translated works from Italian, notably Dante’s *Divine Comedy*. Celebrated for wit, clarity, and erudition, he remained a prominent voice in English-language letters for decades.
