Cornelius Vanderbilt

Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794–1877) was an American shipping and railroad magnate, widely known as “Commodore” Vanderbilt. Born on Staten Island, New York, he built his early fortune in maritime transport before expanding into railroads, becoming one of the most prominent industrialists of the 19th century. Though not primarily an author, Vanderbilt’s name appears in historical accounts and quotations reflecting his business methods and ambitions. He was also a philanthropist: his major gift helped found Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, which was named in his honor. Vanderbilt’s career helped shape modern American transportation and the rise of large-scale private enterprise.
