Dan Rather (Daniel Irvin Rather Jr., born October 31, 1931) is an American journalist best known for his long career at CBS News. He reported for CBS for decades and became a prominent television correspondent during major national events, including the civil rights era, the Vietnam War, and the Watergate period. Rather served as anchor and managing editor of the *CBS Evening News* from 1981 to 2005, succeeding Walter Cronkite. He also hosted the newsmagazine *48 Hours* and later worked with HDNet (now AXS TV) and produced independent reporting through his own media ventures.
