Daniel Berrigan
Daniel Berrigan (1921–2016) was an American Jesuit priest, poet, and anti-war activist. Ordained in 1952, he became a leading religious voice in opposition to the Vietnam War. In 1968 he and eight others—later known as the Catonsville Nine—burned draft files in Catonsville, Maryland, using homemade napalm, an act that brought national attention and led to his conviction. Berrigan spent time underground and later served prison time. He continued writing poetry and essays and speaking on issues of war, peace, and social justice throughout his life.
