Daniel Patrick Moynihan

Daniel Patrick Moynihan (1927–2003) was an American sociologist, diplomat, and public official. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised in New York City, he studied at Tufts University and earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the London School of Economics. He gained national attention for *The Negro Family: The Case for National Action* (1965), widely known as the Moynihan Report, which examined poverty and family structure. Moynihan served in the administrations of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford, and was U.S. Ambassador to India and later U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations. A Democrat, he represented New York in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 2001.
