Dean Kamen

Dean Kamen (born 1951) is an American inventor and entrepreneur. He founded DEKA Research & Development, a New Hampshire–based engineering firm known for developing medical and consumer technologies. Kamen is widely associated with the invention of the Segway personal transporter, introduced in 2001. He has also worked on medical devices, including the AutoSyringe insulin pump and the iBOT mobility system. In 1989 he founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a nonprofit that promotes STEM education through robotics competitions for students. Kamen has received major honors for innovation, including the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
