Denise Levertov
Denise Levertov (1923–1997) was a British-born American poet known for lyric intensity and moral engagement. Born in Ilford, Essex, she moved to the United States in 1948 and later became a U.S. citizen. Levertov was associated with the Black Mountain circle and was influenced by modernist innovations in line and breath. Her work ranges from intimate observation to outspoken political protest, especially against the Vietnam War, and later explores religious and spiritual questions. She taught at several American universities, including Stanford University. Among her notable books are *The Sorrow Dance* (1967), *To Stay Alive* (1971), and *Breathing the Water* (1987).
