Dennis Gabor

Dennis Gabor (1900–1979) was a Hungarian-born British electrical engineer and physicist best known as the inventor of holography. Born in Budapest, he studied engineering in Germany before leaving in the 1930s and later settling in the United Kingdom. Gabor worked in industry and research, including at British Thomson-Houston, and became associated with Imperial College London. In 1947 he proposed the principle of holography, a method for recording and reconstructing wavefronts, though practical realization awaited the development of the laser. For this work he received the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physics. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
